Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said he can envision a return to an era where multiple currencies are in use in the United States.
During Powellâs testimony before the Senate Banking Committee on Facebookâs plannedLibra cryptocurrency, å½¼ã¯è¨ã£ã: âThe size of Facebookâs network means it could be, essentially, immediately systemically important.â
Though the initiative raised âa lot of serious concerns,â including privacy, money laundering, æ¶è²»è ä¿è·, and financial stability, he began to speak favorably about other cryptocurrencies.
âAlmost no one uses bitcoin for payments, they use it more as an alternative to gold,â he said Thursday afternoon. âItâs a speculative store of value.â
Powell has stated in the past that the United States should not return to the gold standard. Some took the statement as referring to a call to âdrop gold, buy bitcoin.â
